Wire Mesh Wall or Bench Wall Build Information
We received a lot of feedback about this bench wall setup, so we wanted to follow up with some more information on it. In some areas it is called gabion. Gabion is wire cage or mesh filled with rocks and/or gravel to create a wall of some sort. This wall can, in turn, be used to create a fence, retaining wall, bench and other structures. The cool thing about this build is that it is a cost effective and greener alternative because concrete and pavers tend to be more energy and material intensive to create. All that is utilized are heavy duty wire mesh material that is rust proof and any rock that is preferable. Because it’s loosely packed rock, water can run through a gabion fence. This helps prevent any displacement in the event of a flood.
To create this, footers are installed and the posts are put in along the mesh in between and attached to the posts. The mesh is then filled with rock. Finally, these were finished with a bench cap on a deck, but these can easily be left as is for walls if desired.
