Outdoor Tile Tips and Tricks

Concrete No More.

Laying outdoor tiles can be overwhelming. Here are some quick and easy tips to help you with the process:

1.   Start by laying 6 inches of a clean 3/4" granite stone. Then top that with a 3/8" chip stone. You can also use concrete.

2.   Use a chip stone with no fines. This means it is clean of rock dust and can compact down completely.

3.   Screed that out at a depth of 1 inch. To screed, take a flat edge across the surface smoothing it out with a back-and-forth motion.

4.  Once it is all level and compacted down, it is time to set the tiles in.

Our team doesn’t use any mortar and instead uses polymeric sand. This kind of sand hardens like mortar, so just make sure you have a bond around the outside of it to hold the material in. We usually use a block or some kind of curbing. Once all is set and finished, you are ready to enjoy your new outdoor space.
