A pool without a usable deck is not a finished backyard.

Custom concrete / shotcrete: wider range, more levers
Custom pools inherit every structural decision: depth transitions, benches, spas, vanishing edges, interior pebble or tile, lighting density, and coordination with boulder features or raised walls. It is normal to see starting thresholds in the higher five figures move quickly into six figures as complexity stacks.
Colorado-specific cost drivers
Access and logistics: Crane or boom reach, street permits, and staging on narrow lots in Boulder, Erie, or older Denver neighborhoods add real cost.
Soils and spoils: Clay expansion, unexpected rock, or export/import of structural fill changes excavation and compaction plans.
Energy and code: Heaters, pumps, and panel work must meet current electrical expectations; that is not the line item to value-engineer incorrectly.
Hardscape integration: Plan pool deck pavers early so drainage, bond beam height, and future low-voltage lighting are coordinated, not retrofitted.
How to compare bids
Ask each builder to separate pool structure, equipment, utilities, permits, and deck / coping / hardscape. If one bid assumes you are keeping a giant lawn panel and another assumes a wraparound patio, the totals will never match.
