Pavers Vs. Stamped Concrete: There's a Clear Winner

One of the most common questions our design and sales team is asked during hardscape and pool consultations is “Which is the better patio material, pavers or stamped concrete?” While initial visual appearance is always at the forefront of our minds, our designers carefully consider the durability and maintenance of the paving materials we suggest and install. There are many pros and cons to pavers and stamped concrete. We could list dozens of praises and concerns associated with this topic, but we believe that the items outlined below are the chief concerns involved in the decision making process for the average residential patio or deck design and installation.

When it comes to deciding which surface is the most worthy investment for your home, the answer might not immediately be clear. Although concrete may be the first material that comes to mind, stone pavers are actually a far better choice when considering durability, beauty and curb appeal for your driveway, walkway, or patio. Concrete is prone to cracking and breaking over time along with color degradation, while pavers are much more durable and can withstand heavy traffic without showing signs of wear. In terms of appearance, pavers add a natural elegance to any outdoor space that concrete simply cannot match. And when it comes to curb appeal, pavers are the clear winner – they can dramatically increase the value of your home. So when it comes to choosing between concrete and stone pavers, the better choice is obvious. Pavers are a better investment in every way.

Durability:

Pavers:

Designed to handle up to 8,000 PSI

Don’t crack easily

Sharp angled joint sand allows weight to balance

Concrete:

Designed to handle up to only 4,000 PSI

Cracks easily

Don’t evenly distribute weight

Longevity:

Pavers:

Our manufacturers guarantee the quality of their paving stone products. Many times near lifetime guarantees

And we offer an exclusive workmanship warranty on all paver installations

Concrete:

Designed to last up to 15 years before major issues appear

Typically no warranty on concrete since it's a rigid, easily crackable surface

Curb Appeal and Return on Investment

Pavers:

Drastic improvement in curb appeal

Doesn't discolor over time

Seen as an investment and immediately increase home's overall property value

Concrete:

Looks plain and dated

Seen as an expense and won’t improve property value

Form and Function

Pavers:

Unlimited customization options

Offered in a wide variety of stone colors, shapes, patterns and designs

Ability to blend designs with outdoor elements such as BBQ islands, fire pits, and water features

Concrete:

Limited variety in color and style

Provides little to no customization outside of choosing shape based on area concrete will be poured

Does not compliment other outdoor elements. Break in colors and styles causes design confusion and mismatch

Final Thoughts

Keep in mind that we install both pavers and stamped concrete. Although we typically suggest our clients shy away from stamped concrete, some prefer the price point and style. We’re still happy to install it. In fact, we recently finished an install you can see below and we enjoyed the finished product. We’ll always educate our clients on the differences, pros and cons, and allow them to make the decision.
